I never do fieldwork without my camera.

The examples here are just a few of the photography conferences and exhibitions I’ve taken part in over the years. But to see more of this work, it’s best to look at my articles, as I often take my own photos while in the field.
I do have an Instagram account, and eventually plan on using it for more than just watching cooking, carpentry and art reels. You can find me there at kimberley.michelle.brown

“Photography and Human Rights” (Panel discussion: Quito, Ecuador)
June 4, 2019
QUITO, ECUADOR – I partook in this panel discussion titled “Fotografía y derechos humanos” (Photography and Human Rights) for the annual Quito book fair at the Pontificia Universidad Catolica del Ecuador.
Four international photographers based in Ecuador spoke about our work in relation to human rights issues, including how photography can be a tool to bring these issues to light, and the complicated role of the photographer working with people in vulnerable positions while battling mainstream media narratives and expectations.

“Mujeres de Pied” (Exhibition: Quito, Ecuador)
March 27, 2019
QUITO, ECUADOR – I participated in this photo exhibition titled “Mujeres de Pied” (Women on Foot) at the Numismatic Museum in Quito, Ecuador, from March 8-31.
Various photographers from Ecuador participated in the exhibition, which featured images of women at work as a way to celebrate women’s unique participation in the economy for International Women’s Day, on March 8. The caption for my photo reads: The Woarani women sit together knitting, chatting and laughing in the community of Nemonpare. They gathered here for a conference where they discussed how to save their territory from oil extraction projects, which ruin their nature economy off of which they survive. Here, the women cut long leaves into strips, which they then roll tightly to create thread. They use this thread to create traditional skirts that they use for special events, fishing bags and other things.

The exhibition ran from March-June, 2019 in a space called Mundana in Antwerp, Belgium, and curated by Javier Perugachi. I was unable to attend the opening, unfortunately. My photo: top right.

March 9, 2018
PUYO, ECUADOR – About 350 Indigenous women from across the Ecuadorian Amazon gathered in Puyo yesterday to celebrate International Women’s Day, and, they say, to fight back against a system that violates their rights. Many women spoke out specifically against the extractive industries operating in their territories.
