“Mujeres de Pied” (Exhibition: Quito, Ecuador)

QUITO, ECUADOR –  I participated in this photo exhibition titled “Mujeres de Pied” (Women on Foot) at the Numismatic Museum in Quito, Ecuador, from March 8-31.

Various photographers from Ecuador participated in the exhibition, which featured images of women at work as a way to celebrate women’s unique participation in the economy for International Women’s Day, on March 8.

The caption for my photo reads: The Woarani women sit together knitting, chatting and laughing in the community of Nemonpare. They gathered here for a conference where they discussed how to save their territory from oil extraction projects, which ruin their nature economy off of which they survive. Here, the women cut long leaves into strips, which they then roll tightly to create thread. They use this thread to create traditional skirts that they use for special events, fishing bags and other things.
